Aruna Asaf Ali was an Indian freedom fighter and social activist. 

Her birth name was Aruna Ganguly. 

She actively participated in the Indian independence movement.  

Aruna Asaf Ali was born on July 16, 1909, in Kalka, Punjab. 

Her father’s name was Upendranath Ganguly, and he was a restaurant owner. 

Her mother’s name was Ambalika Devi.  

Aruna Asaf Ali is best remembered for her prominent role during the Quit India Movement of 1942, where she worked alongside Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters. 

She actively participated in various protests and campaigns against British colonial rule, advocating for India’s freedom. 

In 1958, she was elected the first Mayor of Delhi. 

She was a member of the Indian National Congress. 

In 1992, she was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.  

She was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1997.

She married Asaf Ali in 1928.  

Aruna Asaf Ali died on 29 July 1996 at the age of 87.
