He was the adopted son of the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao II.

His mother was Ganga Bai. 

He was one of the leaders of the rebellion in Kanpur, India.  

He played a pivotal role in the Indian Revolt of 1857.

He is considered a hero by Indians for his fight against British colonialism.
