Shakuntala Devi was an Indian mathematician, writer, and mental calculator. 

She was popularly known as the “Human Computer”.

She was born on November 4, 1929, in Bangalore, India.

She demonstrated extraordinary mathematical skills from a very young age, and by the time she was six years old, she could perform complex calculations mentally.

She gained worldwide recognition in 1977 when she solved the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in just 50 seconds, a feat that earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

On 18 June 1980, she demonstrated the multiplication of two random 13-digit numbers – 7,686,369,774,870 × 2,465,099,745,779. She correctly answered 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 in 28 seconds. This was recorded in the 1982 Guinness Book of Records. (1)

Shakuntala Devi also authored several books on mathematics, including “Figuring: The Joy of Numbers” and “The World of Homosexuals.”

She was an advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and worked towards the decriminalization of homosexuality in India.

Shakuntala Devi was also a successful astrologer.

Shakuntala Devi passed away on April 21, 2013, in Bangalore, India.

Her legacy as a mathematical genius and a champion for social justice continues to inspire people around the world.

She was one of the few female mathematicians of her time and paved the way for women in the field.

In 2020, a biopic was made on the life of Shakuntala Devi, starring Vidya Balan in the lead role. The movie titled “Shakuntala Devi”.
