Ahilyabai Holkar was a prominent ruler of the Maratha Malwa kingdom. 

Ahilyabai was born on 31 May 1725 in present-day Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.  

Her father’s name was Mankoji Shinde, and her mother’s name was Sushila Shinde.  

Her father taught her to read and write. 

She married Khande Rao in 1733.  

When Khande Rao died in the battle of Kumbher in 1754, she was trained in military affairs. 

She ascended the throne in 1767 after the death of her husband and son. 

Under her reign, she initiated various public works projects, such as building roads, bridges, temples, and ghats along the river. 

She was a devotee of Lord Shiva

She built hundreds of temples and dharamshalas all over India. 

The reign of Ahilyabai lasted for thirty years.

Ahilyabai died on 13 August 1795 at the age of 70.  

She is remembered as one of India’s greatest female rulers.
