Amrita Pritam was a renowned Indian novelist and poet.  

She was born on August 31, 1919, in Gujranwala, British India (now in Pakistan).

Her father’s name was Kartar Singh Hitkari, and her mother’s name was Raj Bibi.  

Her mother died when she was eleven. 

Amrita Pritam’s real name was Amrit Kaur, but she adopted the pen name “Amrita”.

She began writing poetry at a very young age. 

One of her most famous works is the Punjabi poem “Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu,” which laments the tragedy of the Partition of India in 1947. 

Amrita Pritam moved to India during the partition.  

Her work was translated into several Indian and foreign languages. 

She received numerous awards and honours during her lifetime, including the Sahitya Akademi Award, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri. 

Amrita married Pritam Singh in 1935. 

She had two children. 

She died on 31 October 2005 at the age of 86.
