वह हिंदुस्तान सोशलिस्ट रिपब्लिकन एसोसिएशन (HSRA) के मुख्य रणनीतिकार थे।
वह 1925 में हुई काकोरी ट्रेन डकैती में शामिल थे।
वह केवल 15 वर्ष के थे जब उन्हें गांधी के असहयोग आंदोलन में शामिल होने के लिए पहली बार गिरफ्तार किया गया था।
चंद्रशेखर आजाद ने प्रण लिया था कि पुलिस उन्हें कभी भी जिंदा नहीं पकड़ पाएगी।
वह भेष बदलने में माहिर थे और कई बार ब्रिटिश पुलिस से बचे थे।
27 फरवरी 1931 को जब इलाहाबाद के अल्फ्रेड पार्क में अंग्रेजों से लड़ाई के दौरान जब उनके पास एक गोली बची तो उन्होंने खुद को ही गोली मार ली और आजाद रहने का अपना प्रण पूर्ण किया।
पुलिस ने बिना जनता को बताए उनके शव का अंतिम संस्कार किया था. जब घटना की जानकारी लोगों को हुई तो जमकर हंगामा हुआ था।

Chandra Shekhar Azad was born on 23 July 1906 in Madhya Pradesh, India.
His real name was Chandra Shekhar Tiwari.
His father’s name was Sitaram Tiwari and his mother’s name was Jagrani Devi.
His mother wanted her son to become a great scholar of Sanskrit.
Chandrashekhar Azad was the chief strategist of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).
He was involved in the Kakori Train Robbery that happened in 1925.
He was only 15 when he was arrested for the first time for his involvement in Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement.
Chandrashekhar Azad had vowed that the police would never catch him alive.
He was a master of disguise and escaped from the British police several times.
On 27 February 1931, when he had one bullet left during the fight with the British at Alfred Park in Allahabad, he shot himself and fulfilled his vow to remain independent.
The police had cremated his body without informing the public. When people came to know about the incident, there were a lot of uproars.
